Placenta Preparation

Almost all mammals consume the placenta after the birth of their young.  With humans being a mammal, there are some who prepare the placenta, dehydrate it and consume it, usually powdered and encapsulated.

This practice is known as placentophagy.  It is believed to be a way to revitalize and reconsume nutrients that would otherwise be lost during the birthing process.

I can make it just about any color of the rainbow. Since food-grade dye was used during the process, you can add this on to any of the above placenta services.

Placenta Honoring

It is an important and Sacred Act to honor the mother and all of

her offerings. To honor the placenta, is to honor the source and

nourishment of life ~Anni Daulter

With the Placenta Honoring service, I can take a piece [or all] of your placenta and wrap it with love, prayers, ceremonial herbs, crystals and resins, to be offered back into mother earth. This is a great way to honor you and your baby's birth journey as well as ask for blessings as you continue together as a family. What you receive when I'm done is your placenta, wrapped in leaves, bound with red yarn and adorned with a crystal. You can use this parcel in your own honoring ceremony according to old traditions, create your own, or I can guide you through a simple service for burial in your garden or yard.

Placenta Traditions

Throughout human history there are many different views of the placenta. The placenta has been depicted as many different animals. It has been thought to be the twin of the baby, an angel, a dragon and the tree of life.

Native American Navajo traditions would have the placenta and umbilical chord buried by the grandmother in a special place that might represent her dreams for the child. Returning the placenta to the womb of the mother earth. Similar traditions can be found across South America.

Hawaii has a sacred ground near the ocean where fathers would bring the placenta and place it in a carved space in the rock near the ocean so that it could be blessed and returned to the mother ocean.

In Bali, the placenta is believed to be the physical form the each child’s guardian angel. After the placenta has been birthed, they wait to cut the cord until the pulsing has stopped, displaying early wisdom of delayed cord clamping. After the cord has stopped pulsing the father will bury the placenta near the family door with inscriptions of blessings and a stone grave marker resting on top.

*This can be added to any of the above services.

Safety When Consuming Placenta

Sarah is a contractor with Well Rounded Momma for placenta services. Our team is dedicated to strict preparation protocols. Per food safety guidelines we do not offer raw prep for capsules, we steam, then dehydrate your placenta at 160°F for around 8 hours, testing for doneness before encapsulation.

All bacteria (including GBS) begins to die at 55° C (131° F) for 30 minutes. Proper preparation at these temperatures ensure that no harmful bacteria are present in the final product.

Tinctures and Salves are made with dehydrated placenta and not raw product, to further ensure that there is no bacteria present.

Well Rounded Momma offers a fantastic FAQ section about placenta preparation.

If during labor or postpartum you experience any infection whatsoever, it is not appropriate to encapsulate and consume your placenta. In any of these cases, you would receive a full refund, minus a $50 reservation fee. Or, if you are able to bring your placenta home, I can still create a Placenta Art Print and/or Placenta Honoring service.
